[…] Tangentailly, at work, we’re playing with Second Life. So far we’re doing a lot of things that look a lot like the real world- a replica of the courtroom building I’m sitting in right now, for example. This is all well and good, and I think it’ll make for some interesting experimentation. But IMHO we won’t really meet our goal (’to explore cyberspace…‘) unless we experiment with stuff that just isn’t possible in the real world- stuff that is not just different, but sometimes provocative. So I decided to spice it up a bit. Instead of a normal human being, I look like this: […]
[…] If you haven’t heard about Second Life yet, check out my post from the other week. For help creating an account and getting to Berkman Island in Second Life, visit our wiki. Also, if you’d like to see the schedule of topics and speakers, visit Berkman’s Fellows Luncheon page. […]
[…] Conference: I’ll be at Beyond Broadcast next weekend in Cambridge. Like physically there, not virtually there. […]
[…] There’s a room in Second Life, a virtual Ames Courtroom (the room where the conference is being held at Harvard Law School) that will also be webstreaming the conference. […]
[…] Second Life and Darfur: The BB conference also has a presence in Second Life. Mr Paulukonis points out that there’s been some fighting in Second Life about Darfur, and that Ethan Zuckerman (who will be at BB) thinks the whole thing is irrelevant at best: When I consider the issues I’m most interested in, collecting information - especially from people who are actually affected by these issues - is a much higher priority than presenting this data in a 3D format. Given that roughly 100,000 people log into Second Life in a given month - compared to roughly one billion using the Internet as a whole - I suspect people trying to call attention to global issues are better off making a website than a 3D space. […] Learn more about Beyond Broadcast in Second Life from Dean Jansen, one of the conference organizers. Click here to read what others are saying. […]
[…] He also mentioned the Beyond Broadcast Conference at the Berkman Center at Harvard (I just did some video shooting for them btw ) and the by now famous photo by Steve Garfield. It also seems that good keeps happening as results of that conference, the last one being “The Infinite Mind” being inspired to do stuff in Second Life. […]
On a similar note to the virtul conferencing idea of this post, we’ve been playing around with virtual conferences for Second Life at work too. I found it to be far more entertaining to have virtual conferences using the new Crowne Plaza Conference Center that is currently free to use in Second Life. I think is really cool that you can have audio chat and even Powerpoint Presentations. I’m sure we will start seeing more of such conference centers pop up.
In any event, if anyone wants more information on how to set up virtual conferencing in Second Life, you can check out the article that I bought that saved me a lot of time in figuring out the setup myself:
Second Life virtual conferencing
[…] BlogHer, Beyond Broadcast and others have already hosted simul-conferences in SecondLife. Cool. […]
